Updated on 16 Oct 2026
What you get
Indian Railways trains young people free of cost in technical trades at its Railway Training Institutes under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana. Each course is a 3-week programme of theory and practical training in one trade, and batches run through the year. Candidates who pass the exam at the end get a certificate, which can also be downloaded from the website. The certificate does not lead to a Railway job - Railway jobs are filled only through open competitive exams - but the skills help in finding work or starting your own.
Who can apply
Indian nationals aged 18 to 35 who have passed class 10 or equivalent from an institution recognised by the central or a state government.
How to apply
Register on the Rail Kaushal Vikas Yojana website, then apply when a batch notification is published. You can choose up to 3 trades in order of preference at one institute. The first list is drawn up on merit the day after applications close; those selected have their documents verified, and the final list is told by email.
Documents you need
- Class 10 mark sheet, and the class 10 certificate if the mark sheet does not show your date of birth
- Address and photo identity proof: Aadhaar card, driving licence, passport, voter ID or another government-issued ID
