What you get
Run by the Kendriya Sainik Board of the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare, the scheme awards 5,500 scholarships each academic year to dependent wards and widows of ex-servicemen and ex-Coast Guard personnel, split equally between boys and girls. It pays Rs 2,500 a month to boys and Rs 3,000 a month to girls, paid once a year, for the length of the course - two to five years. Only professional degree courses recognised by a central regulatory body such as AICTE or MCI qualify, and among postgraduate courses only MBA and MCA; studying abroad and distance learning do not. Other scholarships together with this one cannot exceed this scheme's amount.
Who can apply
Dependent wards and widows of ex-servicemen and ex-Coast Guard personnel in the first year of a professional degree course (lateral entry excepted) who scored 60% or more in the minimum educational qualification - class 12, diploma or graduation, as the course requires. Students in the second or a later year cannot apply, and wards of civilians, including paramilitary personnel, are not eligible.
How to apply
Apply online on the Kendriya Sainik Board portal; paper applications are not accepted. Applications are taken each year between 15 August and 15 November and are advertised in newspapers and through the Rajya and Zila Sainik Boards. Use the student's own email and mobile number, and answer any observation raised on the application within 10 days, or it is rejected automatically.
